It has been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale), in collusion with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), vanished into the night. Assuming responsibility for the death of Harvey Dent, Batman sacrificed everything for what he and Gordon hoped would be the greater good. Saved by some top-tier performances from Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt - The Dark Knight Rises suffers from over-indulgence elsewhere. A fragmented plot diminishes the impact of Nolan's DC swansong, and robs it of momentum.
