A Stephen Fry-led reimagining of the same-name short story by Oscar Wilde that screened as an Official Selection of the 2023 Annecy Animation Film Festival, The Canterville Ghost tells the story of a modern American family that moves to their recently purchased country home, Canterville Chase in England, only to find it is haunted by a ghost. Effectively, Sir Simon de Canterville (Fry) has been haunting the grounds of Canterville Chase successfully for over 300 years, but he meets his match when he tries to scare out the new arrivals.

Technically the animation is about as good as could be hoped for under the circumstances... But none of this erases a sense of the film as a lost cause, which in turn generates a degree of unintended pathos.

It’s not going to set the world alight, but with plenty of knockabout humour and kinetic set-pieces for the kids and Shakespearean quotes and witty bon mots for the parents, this might just provide the perfect diversion...

There are some laughs in the first few reels [but the film] ranks only as a passable lark that starts well but becomes increasingly talky as the story plods on...It’s competent but unexceptional stuff. Advice: wait for it to stream.

SHOULDA JUST WATCHED THE TRAILER OVER AND OVER! This is one of those movies were unfortunately all of the highlights and all of the best parts are contained in the trailer, and that truly is the extent of how “good” this movie actually is. The animation is pretty poor and seems like Saturday morning TV caliber. The characters are almost expressionless with confusing dialogue and a subpar plot line. I sat there wondering what I had done that was so wrong that I should be subjected to such punishment for two hours, and wished that I would’ve simply watched the trailer over and over and over again, as that would have been inherently better than sitting there for the full movie. At least the popcorn didn’t suck.

I liked this adaptation a lot. I appreciate a movie that is made to connect a new generation with the classics. The voice acting was fantastic and the animation (especially in the locket sense and the garden) was a treat.
