The film itself could've used more of an edge. Because once you carve out the lead performance and the central theme, Sweetheart is just your run-of-the-mill-sole-survivor-stranded-on-a-deserted-island-fending-off-a-carnivorous-aquatic-monster movie.

In many ways, Sweetheart is a very simple but effective story; a gorgeously shot creature-feature-survival-horror that does a lot with a little, elevates the genre, while also building sustainable tension around a terrific lead.

Full length short movie if that makes sense. Sweetheart is 82 minutes but the content could be condensed to a fraction of that. Kiersey Clemons holds the movie together, acting for long minutes with no dialogue. Reminiscent of the early days of Lost - that sense of no back story, just events in the present. When her boyfriend and the other girl arrive this changes into another film - not quite as good really. Unusual, bare bones movie making - I enjoyed it. Oh and an old school inexplicable monster. Good stuff!

Um filme daqueles que não explica o de onde surgiram os personagens, como era a sobrevivência da protagonista a base de água de coco, peixes que ela mesma pescava na baixa maré, e coca cola velha, e nem se foi resgatada, que bicho era aquele e seu propósito. O fim bem xoxo só fiquei pensando que todo aquele incêndio era real e desnecessário, se não for, é um ótimo efeito visual.

Sweetheart never fully lives up to the genre-bending, creature-feature thrills it could've, but for those who can forgive its inconsistent, somewhat bland execution, the film may serve as just the right mixture of summer fun, intermittent suspense, and gripping shipwreck drama.
