Critics Consensus

While Taraji P. Henson puts in a powerful performance, STRAW is ultimately too monotonous with miserableness to sustain its dramatic premise.

“Straw” has all the feels it wants and little of the art it needs. Go to Full Review

Henson — so deeply committed to her character’s emotional cratering — still makes us care. Go to Full Review

Straw isn’t the worst Perry film, but it suffers from the same problems that plague all of his projects. The narrative is chock full of heavy-handed metaphors, fussy plotting and strained drama. The best parts of the film can be attributed to Henson. Go to Full Review

Straw is Tyler Perry Black trauma porn dialed up to one hundred and fifty percent. The movie is filled with Black actors who all need to make a paycheck. Go to Full Review

Taraji tackles this role like every mother who has ever lived is channeled through her. It is the best performance of hers in years. She’s a revelation and deserves the praise. Go to Full Review

...a new thriller from Tyler Perry. What makes this one work so well? The way Taraji P. Henson and Sherri Shepherd carry the brutally realistic backstory. Go to Full Review

Craig W. @MCWaxman 4d Taraji Henson carries the movie and does a great job with her character See more Alice W @Alice123067 Jan 20 Started off great but failed to sustain! It becomes predictable, boring and unrealistic! The fact that every black American in the world seem to be watching her as the crime unfolded was a bit out of touch.. Tyler Perry's movie making skills have dwindled substantially! Hit the gates to adhere to reality. Everyone knows you can't be kicked out of an apartment or home in one day without legal action and going to court. The same way they're just not going to haul your child off from school in one day without an investigation, furthermore every person in the community glued to their phone watching her at the bank. This is all just absolute nonsense. Don't waste your time with this! Oh and don't forget the lady cop who looks like a super model! See more René L Jan 18 Hermosa película con actuaciones increíbles. See more Lunathi Q @Lunathi Jan 7 Straw is a powerful film that ultimately finds its footing. What begins feeling familiar and slightly uncertain grows into an emotionally honest and compelling story, carried by strong performances — especially Taraji, with solid support from Teyana, Rockmond, and the rest of the cast. My one real criticism lies in the final twist. While ambitious, it feels unnecessary and somewhat disconnected from the emotional journey the film has already completed. The story had earned a natural ending, and the added twist slightly undermines that trust. Sometimes restraint is the most powerful choice — art doesn’t always need to explain itself further. See more Hannah J @MuzzaL991 Dec 29 Absolutely incredible. Gripping from the first few seconds, immaculate acting, totally worth a watch. Cried my eyes out!
