Meaningful and muscular, balancing blockbuster action with meaningful character drama better than almost any other Star Trek film, at once hopeful and dark, First Contact is a truly rousing space opera, thrilling, emotional and genuinely frightening; it's no grab bag of camp gewgaws; it stands proud and apart, accessible even to the Trek-deficient. With its adroit insights into human history, identity, and sexuality, First Contact is adorned with philosophical and humorous tidbits. It remains the high-water mark of The Next Generation films, showing us a tomorrow of promise and possibility with stories that lift us from the muck of what we are to the summit of what we might learn to be, all astronauts on some kind of Star Trek.
