It is a weighty, dense work, with echoes of a literary, impressionistic novel, but bear with its fragmented narrative; it tells important stories. It’s also one of the most visually stunning films I’ve ever seen. Worth it just for that.

This German entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards projects haunting and lyrical girlhood memories of four female protagonists enduring generational trauma of silenced desires and miseries happening in a farmhouse that witnesses it all through history spanning decades from 1910s to 2020s.

A definite work of art. A two and a half hour contemplation on the Freudian Eros and Thanatos as seen in rural Germany across two or three centuries. Times are not determined with accuracy. Excellent cinematography throughout. Very good acting with the participation of many children. On Mubi.
