Now, upon rewatching it, I forgot how intentionally muted the color palette is to resemble the black-and-white Taijitu symbol, which appears multiple times throughout the movie. The production design and costumes are amazing to see. Its story is a slow-drip historical drama, with a few amazing fight scenes. Can't help but notice hints of political propaganda that are often present in his other big budget extravaganzas. The action sequences are unique but lack any substance. Truly, you don't get to see something so beautiful every day. This really deserves a higher definition version (it apparently has one), but I really couldn't find one which is a shame. See more Donald A @RT43018869 01/17/2025 Still trying to digest what I just watched. Came here to read reviews after the fact and it appears I’m not alone in feeling this was a near masterpiece. Plot, cast, twists, action and the cinematography… the light vs shadow, the subtle sounds to the and acting and moments had me entranced nearly the entire film. This might be the best martial arts film I’ve ever seen. Titling it that honestly feels like a bit of a crime. It’s much more.
