Critics Consensus

Deftly exploring the uneasy tension between artistic expression and personal connection, Sentimental Value is a bracingly mature work from writer-director Joachim Trier that's marvelously acted across the board.

This is a film that sets out to make you feel things, but does it with seeming effortlessness, so you never feel like big moments are being signposted. Go to Full Review

The tone is rich and sophisticated. Shadows of childhood tragedy and adult mis-steps fall across the drama. Sorrow is often in the air. This in no way sits oddly with a number of excellent jokes, including a doozy about Ikea. Go to Full Review

…a highly recommendable movie that’s hard to pin down; Sentimental Value is comical, and doesn’t end unhappily, but it’s there’s genuine pain and drama, but played through ordinary conversations between fairly extraordinary people… Go to Full Review

The older daughter was a fantastic, neurotic character. She really seemed to need a relationship with her father to steady her self. See more Joseph Jan 20 This is a film whose entire plot will destroy you inside and the final scene will build you up again. This is not just this particular family drama. So what if the director is influenced by Bergman? Who loves cinema and doesn't love Bergman? Thank you! This is why i love Cinema! The director understood, I believe, that "less is more." Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge there is only one theater showing this film presently.
