When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.

Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Raymond is light years away from the big lunk Lenny in Of Mice and Men or the deaf-mute girl in Johnny Belinda. It is, quite simply, the most memorable, impassioned performance of the year.

Hoffman is at the peak here I think. I was really pleasantly surprised with the treatment of the MC's by the other characters and the script. Sappy, not too sappy. Charming, not too charming. A real sweet spot of a movie. Definitely worth seeing if you haven't, or have no connection to autism, which is why I checked this out in the first place.

This is one of the best acted movies I have seen in a long time, and I actually believe it has aged well. Although the storyline can feel drab or uncompelling at times, the overarching theme of acceptance and compassion makes it a good watch.

How this movie made me feel in one word: Compassionate. Excellent performances, clear intention & obstacle and sharp character development. What more can you ask for in a film? I had a great time watching Rain Man. Dustin Hoffman transforms himself into Raymond Babbitt in an incredibly unique way. At the same time, Tom Cruise does an admirable job of playing off his character. The story is straightforward and the emotional beats hit hard. Best Character: Raymond Best Quote: There are too many to choose from, but I'll pick "C. H. A. R. L. I. E. C. H. A. R. L. I. E. Main man." - Raymond Best Scene: The bathroom scene. (honorable mention to when Ray presses his head against Charlie) Best Piece of Score: "Leaving Wallbrook" Watch filtered on VidAngel
