The brutality of Raging Bull is intense, a mood Scorsese maintains consistently. And, connected with that, is the director's search for, if not beauty, then poetry, within that vivid viciousness. He succeeds in that search.

De Niro playing La Motta in Raging Bull is beyond mere typecasting. It is an apotheosis. With La Motta as technical adviser, De Niro, an actor with a passion for authenticity, has found the ideal outlet for his singular talent.

On rewatching it, I am not that enthused. DeNiro definitely abused his body to a great extent playing his character. However, La Motta’s actions are not really explained. Why in some fights he stood to take a punishment? Unclear. According to the script he tried to reconnect with his brother, but his three children ended up in a black hole. If the lesson is that you can screw your life, then the movie is successful, although the hero does not elicit my sympathy.

This is a fine film as far as performances and imagery go. But the story is pure nihilism and vice. It's a terrible story with very little to laud. I think it's an amazing perspective on modern man that this film is rated so highly by so many. Terrible film. Would not suggest anyone watch it.

Could the producers have just spent more money on the sound? Feels like the Godfather movies and Rocky got together and had a Raging Bull baby a few years later. All old news.
