Verdict: Messy, melodramatic, and often frustrating, Purple Hearts is a flawed romance that leans heavily on chemistry and music to stay afloat. I’ve always enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers trope when it’s done right, but this just wasn’t it. The story had all the ingredients for something powerful: romance, military themes, emotional stakes, and solid actors. But the execution felt rushed and unfocused, like the director had no clear vision for what the movie was meant to be. The cinematography and editing felt frantic instead of beautiful or impactful. Military stories usually touch my heart, but this felt too simple, almost lazy. It seemed like they were filming scene after scene without actually building a gripping story. The songs were pretty mid too, which didn’t help. This could have been such a strong romance with real emotional weight, but it fell flat on so many levels. So much wasted potential.
