If you want a masterclass in how a documentary can completely lose the plot, look no further. Instead of focusing on the victims or the actual gravity of these crimes, this project spends an absurd amount of energy playing sympathy card tricks for predators and painting public accountability as the real villain. Omitting crucial evidence like actual illegal material found on hard drives just to manufacture a narrative that law enforcement and public interest figures are "harassing" these guys is outright journalistic malpractice. It’s infuriating, manipulative, and a massive insult to anyone looking for actual justice. Hard pass. David Osit’s documentary revisits To Catch a Predator with fascinating archival footage and a welcome refusal to frame the series as either heroic public service or pure exploitation. Its sharpest insight is that the real discomfort lies not only in the televised humiliation, but in the audience’s appetite for righteous spectacle. The film becomes less focused when it expands into internet vigilantism, true-crime culture and amateur sleuthing, sometimes raising provocative ideas without fully developing them. Its contemplative pace can also feel meandering, but the questions linger. By making a familiar piece of early-2000s television feel unsettlingly strange again, Predators delivers a thoughtful, if imperfect, examination of justice as entertainment.
