Kevin L @Lakeman 6 hrs ago First seen in 2014, "Phoenix" is still the finest work of Petzold's impressive career, imo. Hoss has never been better. Such a commanding presence; her acting skill, intelligence, intensity as well as subtlety is remarkable. The writing sets this film apart most of all. It's a complex, layered story, but Petzold pulls it off so well. There's no rush, no macguffin crutch, just a well-paced film that pulls the viewer fully into its world, just as the former lover/partner is drawn in only to feel the devastating truth that he must know. Truly inspired. Excellent performances by the leads & strong support work the the rest of the cast. 4.3 stars See more Jack S @RT58840043 Jun 8, 2025 It’s a tribute to this engrossing film that viewers can foresee the inevitable conclusion early on and yet still experience an emotional wallop during the reveal in the last act. I was drawn into the story of this damaged individual so completely that I didn’t register the “implausibility” mentioned by many of the critics. Hoss is simply unforgettable here as a holocaust survivor uncertain about learning the truth behind a betrayal. Am I expected to believe he never remembered her voice. This film broke the contract between story and my believability. It never made any sense.
