Joaquin U @Joaquin1 1d Entertaining. Solid cast, led by Douglas, delivering a strong performance—backed by notable photography and a tight script. An early Kubrick effort, already showing his remarkable talent as a director, with a theme familiar to him: exposing the brutality, stupidity, and false heroics of war. Still, while it’s a good movie, it’s not a great one. The pacing drags, and it feels unemotional, as if the story was approached a bit too intellectually. Very watchable, though. In my experience as a film student (Temple U) and a one-time film critic (in Philly 'alternative newspaper' in the 70s) and just as a movie lover, I feel that this is both the best war movie and the best anti-war movie ever made. My impression from the bits of his films I had seen was that he was a calculated filmmaker but still cold. Sure enough that’s pretty much exactly what Paths of Glory is. Technical precision in a condemning portrayal of military incompetence. Yet still by the end of the film, hope is so lacking that one feels only despair and cold. This was the reality of WW1 and so it’s hard to fault Kubrick for such a portrayal but I also have to admit it was still cold and distant and that’s off putting to some degree.
