It made double the budget, which I gather amounts to breaking even! It didn't lose money, at least. Anyone who grew up on Red Dwarf will recognise the set-up. Chris Pratt's character finds himself alone on a spaceship, in danger of dying from sheer loneliness. A malfunction has caused his sleeping pod to open several decades ahead of time. Everyone else is in a coma. He makes the fateful decision - fateful for everyone, as it turns out - to sabotage another pod in order to have someone to talk to; to have a companion. This brings J-Law into it. Alone together, they make the best of things. The ship has plenty of diversions, despite being a sleep voyage. Eventually she discovers the truth, that he deliberately robbed her of her future on the planet they were headed to. But by then we've learned how frivolous was her intention, how much pain she caused others by choosing to leave Earth. Fate or fortune? What rules our destiny? Pratt and Lawrence carry the story exceptionally between them and although it slightly falls off at times in keeping you enthralled, it's a splendidly good watch. Pacing at times is absolutely atrocious, The Writing is extremely basic and meets every traditional trope commonly found in romance films. There's nothing about this movie that stands out no matter how deep into space it takes us. The score is absolutely amazing however ;even though it mirrors Thomas Newman's past work. It still delivers and makes the movie shine. The acting is a mixed bag, ranging from stellar to somewhat lifeless and lacking real emotion.
