See more 09/30/2019 6/10 confusing, pompous, gritty, true See more 03/01/2017 Martin Freeman stars as Rembrandt in Greenaway's film that posits that Rembrandt discovered that a murder had been concealed by the members of the militia company depicted in "The Night Watch" and that he embedded clues in the painting as an accusation. It's an odd film that incorporates deliberate anachronisms, mainly in the way characters speak, and references back to earlier Greenaway films, mainly "The Draughtsman's Contract" and "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover". It's also a very deliberately profane and raunchy film. If you're dying to see Freeman naked ... look no further. See more 05/20/2016 Peter Greenaway's film: beautiful, but totally unapproachable. See more 02/24/2016 I haven't forgiven Greenaway for the shit he pulled in The Baby of Macon but this reminded me of the possible beauty of his art, even if it is very conventional by his recent standards. The lighting is impossibly gorgeous, and the sadness it's frequently imbued with surprisingly affecting. It makes me want to re-watch all his classics on proper Blu-Ray transfers, including this one. The dialogue is sharp and witty, with a dose of black humor typical to Greenaway movies. Unfortunately, the story is a bit muddled and not easy to follow.
