Because it seems like he doesn’t really want to be in Mr. Popper's Penguins. He goes through the motions of doing comedy, but there doesn’t seem to be any enthusiasm behind it. Not that this movie really seems to understand humor. Whenever there is a lull in the laughs (which is often), they just have a penguin fart or poop. Yay comedy. And I know this film is for kids, but it’s also lacking in the logic department, with events sliding along from cliché to cliché with no real reason behind them. So, yeah, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a pretty pathetic and pandering picture. And the quality of it overall is what you'd expect...and this is no different. At least it's not insane like Happy Feet. This is like if Hallmark made a penguin movie. It's so predictable, one note, no stakes, and surface level stuff. The acting isn't good but granted it's not like anyone is given anything to work with. Carrey I can't tell if he's trying at times or is sleepwalking through this. Regardless this is one of the weakest performances I've seen from him. He's one note, feels like he doesn't care quite a bit, and only in very tiny spurts does the Carrey persona we know pop up. Everyone else man is super forgettable. The cinematography is very basic stuff, subpar penguin CGI, terrible toilet humor, and just flat humor the rest of the time and just subpar also. The music is ok, boring generic, and forgettable.
