No sooner does Italian-American widow Loretta (Cher) accept a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend, Johnny (Danny Aiello), than she finds herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage). She tries to resist, but Ronny lost his hand in an accident he blames on his brother, and has no scruples about aggressively pursuing her while Johnny is out of the country. As Loretta falls deeper in love, she comes to learn that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance.

I expected this to be a lot better given the accolades it received. When it aims to be a comedy, it falter. When it embraces itself as a family drama, the story and the characters thrive.

Moonstruck isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. The humor is outdated, the acting is unnatural, and the ending is terrible. Nicolas cage’s overacting was uncomfortable to watch, and he had zero chemistry with Cher. The story is unconvincing as it is, but the final kitchen scene has the lousiest writing I’ve ever seen. There’s no way people liked this movie even back in the ‘80s.
