Rafi M @RT61647557 Sep 6, 2026 This movie is disliked by a lot of people, but to those of us who had traumatic childhoods it's almost like therapy, to see these experiences at a remove, and to be able to control it with the remote. For the same reason I like 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf,' because it reminds of listening to my parents night after night in the next room, 'Mommie Dearest' depicts an abusive parent as a caricature, that can be objectified and put on a shelf. It's easy to dismiss as sensationalistic by people who grew up in peaceful, loving homes, but with all due respect, they don't know what they're talking about. Faye Dunaway herself won't talk about this movie, because what it depicts is awful - but it's the awful truth, that she entered into with the authenticity and courage of a consummate actor. Fave Dunaway did an admirable iob portraying this egomaniacal manic depressed monster. Having seen movies and interviews with Joan Crawford I certainly most definitely can imagine that this is how she truly was. The movie is less introspective and focuses mostlv on Joan's emotional and sometimes physical abuse of Christina Crawford. It took guts to make such a movie and Faye Dunaway should be celebrated and commended on the iob she's done here.
