Tennis instructor Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) grows friendly with Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode), a wealthy student who shares an interest in opera. Invited to attend a performance with Tom, Chris meets the family and instantly attracts Tom's sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer). Chris marries her to get a job with her millionaire father, Alec (Brian Cox), but a dangerous affair with Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson), Tom's American girlfriend, threatens his newfound social status.

Match Point is melodramatic, with the whole story turned on a set of unlikely and ludicrous eventualities, which Allen only too eager to call “luck”. The story makes almost zero sense, and it works neither as a drama-thriller, nor as a romance-comedy.

Woody Allen siendo Woody Allen, la contemplación del entorno casi como un turismo cinematográfico siempre como lugar para cruces sentimentales fuertes que muchas veces te dejan incómodo. La película te deja un mal sabor de boca, pero esto es bueno. Evoluciona de una manera que el final le da todo el sentido al inicio de la propia película. Eso sí, no tiene nada que ver con el Tenis.

The movie gets you to root for it's undeserving protagonist through deft storytelling and solid performances. The climactic twist emphasizes Matchpoint's motto - sheer luck trumps all other factors.

I had high hopes for this one but was kind of disappointed because it was pretty predictable. The acting was decent but the plot tended to drone on a bit. I liked many Woody Allen movies (Sleeper was my favorite) and enjoyed his standup back in the day but this one wasn't up to his normal standards in my mind.

A favorite I have revisited several times. A treat for Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson fans (and who isn’t?) it is a gripping, if cynical, thriller. Beautifully shot in London, with all the intimacy and affection Allen has previously adorned on New York City.
