Critics Consensus

Machete is messy, violent, shallow, and tasteless -- and that's precisely the point of one of the summer's most cartoonishly enjoyable films.

Rodriguez retreats into gruesome violence and flaccid comedy, grasping feebly for topical relevance... Go to Full Review

The film has some outrageously enjoyable set-pieces, but overall, the convoluted plot and Rodriguez' agenda spoil the fun. Go to Full Review

It's terrible like a grindhouse house film and a B-movie is supposed to be, but that's the point and that notion gives the movie its fun. Go to Full Review

Rodriguez’s delightful denouement reclaims various Mexican stereotypes and combines them with recognizable humble professions for immigrants into a triumphant call to arms and a catharsis of violence against the people who hate them. Go to Full Review

Chris S @Janomi 1d Machete is good because Danny Trejo finally gets the lead spotlight, and he is perfect for it. He has the face, presence, and silent toughness to make Machete feel like a walking grindhouse legend. The movie knows exactly why he is fun to watch and builds around that. The exploitation attitude is the whole point. Machete is violent, political, ridiculous, and knowingly trashy, committing to its fake-trailer origins without pretending to be classy. The best moments are completely insane in the right way, especially when Machete turns anything and everything into a weapon. The supporting cast adds to the absurd fun, with Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson, and Cheech Marin all understanding the assignment. The story is messy and thin, but Machete is loud, bloody, and entertaining. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Nov 19 For the longest time, I've always wanted to see this movie because I'm a HUGE fan of Grindhouse. When I finally got around to it, I wasn't disappointed, but I felt like there was something missing. But who can deny a total badass like Danny Trejo rizzing up the babes, and striking down the bad guys with a machine gun motorcycle. So awesome!!!! Also it was a real treat to see my favorite character from Planet Terror: JT!!!! Love that guy. See more Christopher L @Mongooseman Sep 6 A few funny bits, and what’s not to love about Danny, however there isn’t enough here to carry a full movie runtime and it shows. Some of the humor gets too hammy and tongue in cheek. It would have been better if it amped up the ridiculousness to 11 and featured better action, the gratuitous Tarantino like violence get a little old and I don’t feel is always the best fit. Worth at least one watch if you’re bored and are a fan of Danny. See more Faiz D @RT95588871 05/13/2025 Pathetic. Didn't like it at all. See more Lewie J @RT08066187 02/04/2025 An extremely poor but blatant attempt at mimicking Tarantino. It’s done in a Kill Bill style, without the style. Is attempted plagiarism a thing in the movie world? If so, Tarantino should have sued! See more Ian W @RT40919311 02/01/2025 What a load of utter rubbish full of wooden acting and gratuitous violence with the odd flashes of flesh to please. Continuity is very poor, blood stained vest and face then its all clean. Exploding car and then it's there all in one piece with the indicator on. Oh dear. And, action/deeds from the protagonist are in line with Deadpool. John Mclain couldn't dive through metal framed windows. All in all its dire tripe and 100% give it a miss. Unless you're 12.
