O filme mostra que algumas escolhas feitas pelos adultos podem acompanhar uma criança durante toda a vida. E também mostra que arrependimento não apaga o passado. Rip pode querer ser um pai melhor. Pode amar Joey. Pode desejar uma segunda chance. Mas isso não significa automaticamente que ele seja a melhor pessoa para criá-lo. Essa é uma conclusão difícil. E justamente por ser difícil, funciona. O filme não entrega aquela solução fácil em que o pai biológico recupera o filho e todos vivem felizes. Ele escolhe um caminho mais doloroso.
