Critics Consensus

Aki Kaurismäki's deadpan wit hits a graceful note with Le Havre, a comedy/drama that's sweet, sad, and uplifting in equal measure.

Here is the sunniest film I've seen by Aki Kaurismaki, and he reveals a lot of sunshine inside for a director whose world is usually filled with deadpan losers. Go to Full Review

It's pure Kaurismäki, a graceful, deeply humanist work, and very tough despite its limpid beauty... Go to Full Review

Le Havre is brought to life by its raw, hopeful humanity; it feels close and real despite its deliberate distance. Go to Full Review

Few ingredients, a lot to say, and only with images. Camaraderie, humanity, cruelty, capitalism, men. All of that without giving mediocre messages. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Claudio C @Claudio666 2h Le Havre (2011) Sweet Film (12,364 – 30 Mar 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In Le Havre, the old shoe shiner Marcel Marx is happily married to his wife Arletty. When a group of African stowaways is found hidden in a container, the boy Idrissa flees. Marcel sees the boy hidden in the water in the harbour and the police looking for him. He leaves food and money for the boy on the ladder. Meanwhile, Arletty has malign cancer and asks the doctor to not tell Marcel. While she stays in the hospital to be treated, Marcel brings Idrissa home and learns that the boy wanted to go to London to meet his mother. While Marcel plots a plan to send the boy to London, the mayor orders Chief of Police Monet to catch the boy. "Le Havre" (2011) is a sweet film with a feelgood story of empathy, friendship and solidarity. All the characters are beautiful people, and the conclusion has two nice surprises. My vote is eight. Kaurismäki makes everything flow seamlessly. Friendship, love, solidarity, immigration, and compassion all coexist without a hitch. Over the years, his cinema has become more refined, more delicate, and deeply human. See more Leaburn O @RT35452347 03/03/2025 A French light comedy with a very happy, uplifting ending. Felt kind of lightweight to me. Shot with those pastel French coloured backgrounds that were all the rage post Amelie. Kitsch. Watched on DVD. See more Dominic R @RT07521249 01/11/2025 Every clip is a work of art, the colours, the subtle movement, Little Bob, how we were drawn into the characters, I am happy that movies like this are still being made. See more Martona T @RT52717972 12/13/2024 The theatrical composition of each scene creates a beautiful path of images leading the way for the viewer through this smooth fable story.
