Kantonio H @KantonioHolmes 1d Olivia Cooke gave a compelling performance!. She has this innocent demeanor affront her side hustle of prostituting. There's no plot twist or over exaggerated contrivances to force the story along. It's an hour and a half of gritty and troubling situations within a desolate town. Every person and thing in this movie exploits and sucks Katie dry to the point of total despair which grants her an epiphany. She has to go! I don't like dramas but I can stomach a good drama. This is that! Katie's choices causes her circumstances and she doesn't have a blame everyone else attitude. She impressively exhibits a level of composure throughout the film that most of us wouldn't have cared to endure. Yes, it's a "Men are bad, even if they're good" type of movie, but it's delivered as well as spiked apple cider during winter. The heroine is a small town young waitress, who apparently can leave her restaurant in the middle of her shift to go to a motel in order to have sex with truck drivers and the like. She has not finished high school and appears to be totally clueless. Her mother doesn’t work and instead is having sex with various male neighbors, unclear if with compensation. But it's well made, and Olivia Cooke gives a once-in-a-lifetime performance. It's not about beauty or sexiness; it's a type of magnetism that's hard to explain. Hopefully, she will be in some better films in the future. Not that this one is all bad, it's just that it's so grim that it becomes overwhelming. It's like the writer kept thinking, "OK, what terrible thing can I do to her next?" It's a film that aims for hard core realism, yet it's totally unrealistic. Katie's unrelenting naivete is unrealistic; the nasty men are unrealistic; the school teacher, the cop, the landlord, the mother--Good grief, this has to be the most evil town in cinema history. Even the one decent guy, played convincingly by Jim Belushi, is not entirely without culpability. Mary Steenburgen fares well as a caring surrogate mother figure, in contrast to all the detestable people in Katie's life. Watch this one with skepticism, and don't expect a happy ending.
