There are moments that deliver—brutal violence, moody atmosphere, and some cathartic payoffs—but overall it feels uneven and far less polished than you’d expect from the fourth entry in a major franchise. Stallone writes, directs, and stars, bringing back Rambo as a weary recluse in Thailand who’s pulled into one last rescue mission. The setup has potential, and early on the film captures a gritty, oppressive mood that fits the character. You can see him struggling to hold back until he’s forced into violence, which gives the story a brief spark of depth. When it works, it really works. The sound design is excellent; explosions, gunfire, and thunder all hit hard. The action scenes are satisfyingly brutal. The movie doesn’t hold back from showing the horrors of war, and that unflinching violence feels almost refreshing in an era of sanitized action films. But nearly everything between those bursts of chaos falls flat. The dialogue is awful, the acting wooden, and the characters barely register as people. Everyone’s a thin archetype pushing the plot to the next firefight. The direction feels dated, the pacing drags, and the late CGI looks cheap. Worse, the film can’t decide what it wants to say. It flirts with themes of morality and compassion but ends up glorifying Rambo’s bloodshed. Like Rambo: First Blood Part II, it celebrates what it pretends to condemn. There’s also a white-savior streak that undercuts any real complexity. The tone swings between grim realism and corny sentimentality, and in trying to be both, it manages to be neither. If you love over-the-top action and can overlook clunky writing, Rambo delivers enough carnage to satisfy. But it never balances spectacle with substance. Loud, occasionally thrilling, but ultimately hollow, it’s a film that wants to be profound and primal and ends up just another forgettable sequel.
