Dr. Jerry Peyser's daughter, Melissa, is about to marry Mark Tobias. Things are going swimmingly until Jerry stumbles across some secret information: Mark's father, Steve, is a CIA operative. Fearing that Jerry will compromise his current assignment if he starts blabbing to authorities, Steve dragoons Jerry into assisting with an intercontinental mission that involves a dangerous criminal, Jean-Pierre Thibodoux.

Douglas is zany when he should be restrained, jubilant when he should be serious, tipping his hat so often that jokes that could almost pass for witty instead come across with all the subtlety of the proverbial bull in the china shop.

Fleming and co. were working from a version that had clicked very well in 1979, and such interest as posterity has in this new take will be in its usefulness as a masterclass in how not to remake a movie.

The unexpected chemistry of the leads and the zany premise are not enough for me to ever consider rewatching this early 2000's spy/action comedy. It's like the screenwriter saw James Cameron's True Lies and wanted to splice the essence of that film with a full-fledged comedy starring Brooks and Douglas.

One of the most inferior remakes I have ever seen. Despite getting some laughs out of Albert Brooks, the 2003 remake of The In-Laws proves that you can't beat the 1979 original with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin, so please just watch that film instead of this abysmal remake.
