A lot of it makes no sense at all -like the idiot searches at the end where our hero was transported place to place as if by magic, with no money and was dressed in each scene of his search in designer togs. Totally unrealistic nonsense. His trip from Europe to the US as if by magic, finding his music teacher in NY -magic! Overall: illogical twaddle. See more april w 12/03/2022 This film is so slow in its progression of telling the story that it began to lose my attention almost at the start. I kept with it, thinking maybe it would pick up further in. It continued to drag along. By the time I was halfway in, I just gave up on it gaining any actual momentum. See more 05/28/2022 I approached this, wary of Holocaust trivialization. This film has so much that is good going for it, that one can allow it some artistic license slack. The evocation of the places and periods is impressive. The music is pretty good. Mr. Skarsgård's portrayal of a fictional character resembling Lauritz Melchior is a standout. The problem is the benign portrayal of the plight of musicians in concentration camps. There was a brief respite for musicians at Theresienstadt--for the purposes of making a propaganda film and fooling the Red Cross. The flush orchestra in the film descends almost to a Hogan's Heroes level of silliness. This is partly made up for, by showing the gruesomeness and squalor of the camps when they were liberated. The portrayal of refugees after the war is pretty good. Cf Enemies, a Love Story. An unexpected way that the film excels is the wide and authentic variety of period cars, in postwar NYC as well as wartime Germany. In the NYC sequence, I caught a glimpse of the distinctive portholes on a '49 Buick. The refugee ships were, indeed, still arriving then. See more Read all reviews
