Imagine a hero who finally gets the full potential of their superpowers, only to do literally nothing with it and get beaten up and killed by a regular ass dude. It's the sort of thing comedy sketches are made of. And worst of all, the outro song is *terrible*, just to twist the knife in the audience even further. The premise—a man waking up to find horns sprouting from his head, with the power to force people to confess their darkest secrets—has all the makings of a dark, stylish supernatural thriller. But instead of leaning into that potential, the movie drags along at a sluggish pace, unsure if it wants to be horror, mystery, romance, or satire. In the end, it tries to be all of them and fails at most. The storyline is painfully bland and slow, taking far too long to reach any kind of payoff. Watching it feels like being strapped into a roller coaster that never moves faster than the initial climb—you keep waiting for that big drop, the heart-racing twist, the payoff moment, but it never comes. Instead, the film meanders from scene to scene without urgency, making the experience feel less like a thriller and more like a chore. The direction doesn’t help. Alexandre Aja, who’s proven before he can create stylish, gory, fast-paced horror (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes), takes a different approach here by keeping the camera tightly locked on Radcliffe. While the intent may have been to highlight his character’s transformation, the focus lands in all the wrong places. Scenes drag on with unnecessary dialogue or heavy-handed symbolism, leaving little room for suspense or genuine intrigue. Daniel Radcliffe himself is decent—he’s clearly trying to shake off his Harry Potter image and dive into darker material—but the film doesn’t give him the support he needs. His performance is overshadowed by a script that can’t decide what story it wants to tell. The supporting cast, while serviceable, is saddled with paper-thin characters that never rise above clichés. The script could have been far stronger if it had committed to a single tone. Instead, it dips into mystery, romance, comedy, and horror without ever fully embracing any of them. Rather than exploring the mythology of the horns in a meaningful way, the story leans into melodrama that feels more exhausting than emotional. It almost reads like an experiment in capitalizing on Radcliffe’s fame at the time—something edgy enough to distance him from Hogwarts but without the strong foundation to actually work. By the end, Horns feels like wasted potential. It’s not the worst movie of the decade, but it’s certainly one of the most frustrating. It could have been something bold, creepy, and memorable, but instead, it ends up as a confusing, slow, and unengaging misfire that fades from memory almost as quickly as it’s over.
