In addition to the beauty of María Valverde, 'Gernika' stands out for the portentous bombing sequence. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 1d Guernica is a watchable and carefully produced historical drama, but its fictional romance never feels strong enough to support the real tragedy surrounding it. James D’Arcy is competent as a disillusioned foreign journalist, while María Valverde is far more convincing when her character directly faces fear, violence and repression than when she is trapped inside the weak love story. The material involving war correspondents, censorship and political propaganda is much more interesting, and the period detail is impressive. Unfortunately, everything often looks too clean and controlled, and the film relies too heavily on melodrama. The bombing sequences are effective, but they arrive after too much time has been spent on a romance with very little chemistry. Technically solid and easy to watch, yet emotionally less powerful than the history deserved. See more 07/07/2020 The bombing of Guernica is one of the great tragedies of all wars, and a devastating example of Franco's oppression of the Basque people. However, this movie is overly dramatic with the lead male's performance leaden and amateurish. Making the Soviets evil was also manipulative and almost childish. The Spanish actors were excellent, but wasted in this silly film. The nude scene was also terribly manipulative and unnecessary. The Guernica bombing is a horrific example of fascist disregard of humanity. It deserves more than this poorly executed film. See more 02/02/2017 Very poor and stereotypical plot. But a good production, with very good photo and camera moves. See more 02/01/2017 Well done. Tells the background of the picasso painting. See more 12/23/2016 A magnificent work of motion picture art. The special effects were outstanding, the action heart-pounding, the drama tear-jerking. To top it off, it was graced with rare, cultural accuracy. A must-see! See more 11/05/2016 Beautiful. This is a tragic, but beautiful portrayal of real events that were just the beginning of a terrible war and catastrophic loss of life. See more Read all reviews
