Though he once spent time in San Quentin, 22-year-old black man Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) is now trying hard to live a clean life and support his girlfriend (Melonie Diaz) and young daughter (Ariana Neal). Flashbacks reveal the last day in Oscar's life, in which he accompanied his family and friends to San Francisco to watch fireworks on New Year's Eve, and, on the way back home, became swept up in an altercation with police that ended in tragedy. Man.. wow!!! Glad I caught this in theaters or I wouldnt have finished it if I tried to watch it at home. Powerful and sadly so relatable. So many of us experienced this story in real time. Its so sad man.

I had to study this film for class, and I think Michael B Jordan does a great job playing a 22 year old gang banger, we get the impression that he was starting to take strides to turn his life around. The story itself is really sad, director Ryan Coogler really does a great job capturing what life is like when you aren't living an extravagant life. Ryan Coogler does this "stereotype activation" really well. I know about these stereotypes, and they are still embedded deep in my brain, even though I know it's just paranoia I will still be worried when I see a bunch of people dressed a certain way or of a certain colour.

Fruitvale Station is a powerful and deeply moving film that hits you right in the gut. Michael B. Jordan gives an incredible, heartbreaking performance, making Oscar feel like a real person rather than just a name in a headline. The film’s quiet, everyday moments make the ending all the more devastating. Tough to watch, but absolutely worth it.
