Brian K @CrazyLegs Mar 19, 2024 The question is: Who is worse, Nick Nolte or Debra Winger? Winger wins that one, because Nolte manages to mostly sleepwalk through the movie, underplaying in a ridiculous role, so he manages to mostly fly under the radar. But Debra Winger decided to play it big, so she looks bad - but big bad. She really needs a good director, so she's adrift here. Is this why she quit acting? The reviews must have been brutal. Also have to give a shout-out to the editor - maybe they didn't have much to work with, but the editing makes a bad movie into an awful movie. The screenplay was apparently by Arthur Miller, so my suspicion is that the actors stuck to the script religiously because everyone was afraid to change a single word. So there are lots of awkward moments and stilted unnatural language. Lastly, the chemistry between Nolte and Winger is just nonexistent. They look, even in the love scenes, like they actually repelled each other. Final stupid pun: With this movie, everybody loses, especially the audiences.
