The film takes its time winding the spring before letting the chaos explode, rewarding patience with brutal, beautifully staged thrills. See more Chris S @Janomi 1d Death Proof is a very solid grindhouse thriller, and Kurt Russell is the best thing about it. Stuntman Mike is charming, creepy, pathetic, and dangerous, and Russell makes the shift between those sides really entertaining. He is terrifying when he has control and almost funny once he loses it. The final chase is fantastic. The practical stunt driving, real speed, hood-riding sequence, and physical danger give the movie an old-school action thrill that feels completely different from CGI-heavy spectacle. Once the chase starts, the film really comes alive. Quentin Tarantino’s hangout structure gives the characters room to talk, flirt, joke, and exist before the violence hits. The movie is more talky and restrained than Planet Terror, which makes it less instantly fun, but the turn from predator to prey is extremely satisfying. Giving this film its due respect, it is a terrific love letter to 1970's grindhouse films. The film stock, the editing, the references and the soundtrack are all lovingly utilized. And it has the BEST CAR CHASE I have ever seen. With that being said, the movie intentionally wastes a lot of time before getting there. There are some all-time great moments in the middle, and the final 20 minutes. But the film wants to mess with you a bit first. See more Read all reviews
