Its storytelling is compelling, touching upon relatable themes of familial relationships. Although the family at the movie's center is Asian, the universal aspects make it relevant to audiences of any cultural or racial background. Depression is one of those blind spots, imo. Sometimes it takes an indie film like this one to really explore the ways in which we're all broken, and the small graces that heal. Tom Huang does just that in "Dealing with Dad"... never flinching, but also never failing to find the humor and warmth inside of our brokenness. A very strong recommend. See more Ross C @RT56962225 05/09/2024 Dealing with Dad deftly showcases the cast members' comedic chops to illustrate some pretty sober themes: family ties tested by dysfunction, generational and cultural gaps, the helplessness one feels in supporting loved ones suffering from mental health issues like depression. While there are some great gags with the family being Asian American: mom setting up her recently divorced son, cringe-inducing parental remarks on daughter's interracial marriage, siblings hazing each other at a Chinese buffet restaurant (bc it's great value for the $), this film is not just for AAPI viewers. Adult children having to care for aging parents travels across cultures as does coping with mental health challenges. DwD brings the laughs with a great cast of characters who move smoothly from chuckles to tenderness. Hayden Szeto, who plays the youngest brother, is a scene-stealer! Bravo to Director Tom Huang for a film that strikes the right balance of seriousness with an excellent cast that brings the humor. See more James H @RT96300659 05/07/2024 So worth the watch! The humor delivers, the pain, and anguish of trying to recover from your trauma while trying to care about the parent that raised you and also caused it is well written and very well executed.
