Critics Consensus

While decidedly not for all tastes, Dead Man marks an alluring change of pace for writer-director Jim Jarmusch that demonstrates an assured command of challenging material.

Both Blake's journey and composer Neil Young's spare, electric guitar score seem endlessly circular; and people are always asking Blake for tobacco. Go to Full Review

The film's pleasures are simply too elusive and mild to make up for a lack of narrative propulsion. Go to Full Review

... once more utilizing a collection of actors he’s worked with prior, is as fascinating a watch now as it was upon release between its anachronistic score from Nell Young (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), it’s dreamlike flow, and fatalistic energy. Go to Full Review

Brad S. @Brad1714 12h I just couldn’t wait to finish this film. As it turns out, I couldn’t finish it, it was that poorly written. See more Adam R Apr 16 Jaramusch's best work probably in his life. Elgaic, comedic, tragic and intensely political if you want that political lens and all the more powerful for its restraint. Absurd, slapstick and stupid in parts as equal as it is epic and existential. William Blake poetry writ fine indeed. Neil Young's wrenching soundtrack is like electro brain shock therapy. Arrestingly beautiful and equally ugly. Stand out performances from everyone including Mitchum's last ever performance. A trippy hallucinatory journey into the western cannon. A perfect execution from an otherwise hit and miss self-aborbed director. His next nearest was Ghost Dog and this piece eclipses that by a thousand miles. See more Read all reviews
