See more Darrin G @realwildchild76 Aug 2, 2026 Classic 80’s romantic comedy that introduces us to Patrick Dempsey who eventually became known as McDreamy on Grey’s Anatomy years later but here is a big dork looking to increase his popularity during senior year by paying the hottest girl in school to pose as his girlfriend. It’s a sweet film that turns up that 80’s charm. This is a rewatch for me since I recently got a boot legged copy of it on blu ray. The story wittily avoids the stereotype of painting the nerds as victims and the popular kids as villains. Instead, delving deeper into the harsh realities of the era’s high school social hierarchy. The characters are incredibly well-written and the actors did a great job of making them likable. I can see why it became a classic. Tim Treakle See more James B @Jsb11971 Feb 21, 2026 You might have to be a less than popular kid at this exact time in history to get this movie but it was 1000 percent spot on in its tropes. Which weren’t trope. They were real. It didn’t showcase all of the then high school archetypes but it didn’t have to and that’s not a reason to be critical. It was focused primarily on two. And it nailed them. Patrick Dempsey was a master class as a late teen in this role and launched his career. You felt his pain even when he unintentionally created the entire sequence of events that led to his own downfall. She grasping for her personal story not one defined by others or another abusive boyfriend. The movie is made more poignant by his rise to stardom outside the movie and her fall into obscurity and then oblivion, and sadly domestic abuse and eventual death.
