Christian M @chriss17eu May 26 Watching this primitive 'Ben-Hur' today feels like witnessing the early foundations of cinematic language, especially knowing the story would later be remade in ways that reflect the evolution of film itself. I approached this 1907 version as an origin point, a prelude to what would come later. My experience was strange: I could identify action, figures, and space, but struggled to connect them into a coherent whole. The story seemed to slip away, forcing me to imagine and fill in the gaps rather than simply watch it. Some details, like the reuse of a shot to extend a key moment, felt both naïve and fascinating. What unsettled me most was not knowing whether I liked it or not. It is less a film to enjoy conventionally than one to endure with curiosity, while appreciating how such primitive experiments would eventually lead cinema toward major technological milestones. Suffers all the typical problems of "Made for TV" movies including cheap production values, audio and visual special effects, bloat to fill alloted air time, erratic pacing for commercial breaks and episode splits, and mediocre script. See the 1959 spectacular instead. It is infinitely better than this. See more 08/04/2015 I wasn't sure if the remake was going to be as good as the Original (1959 with Charlton Heston), but it was a pretty awesome film. Same 'ole tale of good old fashioned betrayal, vengeance, redemption and forgiveness. Definitely worth it to rent. See more 02/17/2015 It's a short TV series. Still prefer the old one played by Charlton Heston, which can be seen around Easter time yearly. The Chariot racing scene was not as good as the old one, what a shame.
