At the heart of this movie is what can only be described as an agon, a contest of ideas, between mother and daughter. The emotional temperature is an extreme, very hot or very cold, you say which, but either way you shiver! Personally, I hated the contemporaneous Cries & Whispers, but Autumn Sonata, although likewise full of pain, is much more relatable. Ingrid Bergman's only movie for her namesake, director Ingmar. It completely captivates the viewer with just a handful of actors and mostly one location, all told in just a little over 90 minutes. This is a very heavy movie where the dialogue is really what drives things forward. There are several deep emotions from all of the characters, and at times there are subtle things that would be interesting on a rewatch. It is a slower-paced film, but it is fascinating top to bottom, and the further it went on, the more engaged I felt. By the end of the film, it is hard to ignore how impactful and thought-provoking it was. Overall, it is among my personal favorites of the Bergman films I have seen so far and a true showcase of great writing and acting. See more Jithin K @Jithin Feb 25, 2026 Ingrid Bergman in her final film role with Liv Ulmann in an Ingmar Bergman film, the expectations were always going to be huge for this. But maybe because of that and feeling like a few things could've been explored further, this felt like one of the weakest from Bergman, but even the weakest is as good as the best from most directors. How it slowly built up the tension between the mother-daughter relationship felt weirdly fresh but hard to watch even after so many years of its release. The second half of the movie showcasing the performances in a way that is very Bergman is where the film really shines. Those closeups with such great dialogues makes it so engrossing.
