See more Wayne M @Wayne93 May 28, 2026 Amrum is a complex and compelling film. One of restraint and quietly observed moments. It's a coming of age film set in the most dramatic of times. It's 1945 Germany and we see a young family on the German island of Amrum seeing out the last days of the war. Father is away in Hamburg as part of the SS and mother is home with three children. At the centre is the oldest child in Nanning. He is a sensitive child and he tries to make sense of the ongoing conflict and how he is treated by the islanders. He goes hunting and is confronted by the vagaries of life and death. He also learns about the history of his family and some dark secrets therein. It makes for a very rich and rewarding film with many subtle notes. The acting is superb too with young Jasper Billerbeck a standout as Nanning. A film of great sunstance and vital importance.
