It follows a boy who wants to belong, then learns that belonging comes with a cost. The bands, the rooms, the records all feel alive, but the heart of the film sits between two people who know they are losing something they cannot name. It is a love letter to rock, youth, and the moment when the fantasy cracks open and lets the truth in. By the end, the songs feel less like a soundtrack than a memory you forgot you had. No matter how many times I see it, I am filled with the most purest sense of joy, confidence, and creativity after watching this movie. Almost famous is a movie that is great for many reasons. It is funny, the acting is good, there is a lot of music, that music is good—however I think it strives most in how it shows the coming of age story. William Miller’s passion both for writing and for rock and roll pulling him out into a world that he has never been able to be exposed to allowed for him to find himself. His lack of exposure to rock life from his mom draws him in at first, everything is so exciting to William, there are beautiful, mysterious girls, romance and drugs, and a band he loves that gives him attention and brings him into their community. However, throughout the film when all of this wears on him he says one of my favorite lines in the movie, perhaps of all time, “When and where does this real world occur?” This movie is perfect.
