Critics Consensus

47 Ronin is a surprisingly dull fantasy adventure, one that leaves its talented international cast stranded within one dimensional roles.

There's nothing pretty or exciting about this movie (inexplicably, it's in 3-D), even when all anyone's doing is fighting. Go to Full Review

47 Ronin is about magic, the fantastic, a witch, and CGI monsters that adorn a muddled and confused plot. Go to Full Review

Heavy on CGI, light on entertainment, 47 Ronin is a dreary and deathly dull tale that you will endure, rather than enjoy. Go to Full Review

Jagdpanzer T @RT44446946 Jul 19 47 Ronin is way better than critics rated it and what some of the audience reviews implied. It's not the greatest movie ever, but it's entertaining enough and has a solid cast. This is one of those films where people aren't being entirely honest (usually) about why they're down rating it. Some people are offended that the main character isn't Japanese, and they seem to think this is "whitewashing" despite Keanu Reeves only being part European. I guess White people get the blame no matter what. The other group is annoyed by the ending of the film, which will understandably alienate a large portion of the audience. Neither group seems to want to admit that their cause for distain here is pretty subjective, so they'll gin up some technical reason for why this totally serviceable film is actually the "worst they've ever seen". The sexy witch played by Rinko Kikuchi alone was worth my time. I also enjoyed seeing Hiroyuki Sanada (as always). See more Smiling D @RT57046910 Jul 9 We know we can all count on Tom Cruise or Keanu Reeves to save Japan with the power of a master Samurai. Marry the most beautiful girl in town and angers all whose underwear is too tight. Be man, beast, or witch, the Anglo from foreign lands will set things right. Plenty of nice hairstyles and cool swords. See more Karthik Y. @madkarthi May 23 It is visually very good. But story plot wise it is too predictable. We can easily predict everything what is gonna happen next. The only good thing is the production values are very nice. Seeing Keanu Reeves as a samurai in the film is full of fun. But too much fictional elements are there and that is getting my mood off completely. See more Pongo K @RT48921889 Apr 6 Too much for too little. Not very exiting, but some entertainment. See more Frans B @FransB Feb 7 Great story told and shown in a very striking way. Very well written and brought to screen. Good cinematography and visually stunning. Lots of action, mystery, intrigue, suspense, witchery, magic, fantasy, emotion and drama. Stellar cast all excel in character. Very memorable and entertaining See more Alex J @DrMohawk Jan 16 It is a good movie. It was when released & probably better now as just entertainment. People had the wrong perspective from the beginning. It wasn't presented as historically accurate but w fantasy elements, Keanu Reeves in the lead & in english, it was meant for wide release. The authenticity of costumes, dialogue & background is what moves the film. There must be more authentic 47 Ronin films but only serious fans have seen them, in Japanese w or w/o subtitles. Compare to what people know & have seen, Last Samurai had to deal w Tom Cruise, but was good when he wasn't the focus. Shogun 1 introduced people to the culture & the recent Shogun (on Hulu/AMC) is so powerful & authentic looking. The same great Japanese actors move all these films. It's a good place to start then see the Real 47 Ronin stories from Japanese filmmakers. Serious fans know all this. People hate Keanu or love him. But he uses his clout to make & move projects.
