Matthew D @OceanSage 3 days ago Josh Hartnett is fantastic as a brave sheriff trying to save his town from a vampire horde. Director David Slade’s vampire horror thriller 30 Days of Night (2007) is super creepy, gory, and scary. Slade’s icy Alaskan backdrop is very sinister. The snow covers the entire little town as vampires show up. 30 Days of Night is full of beheadings of flaming corpses. Slade just lets his vampires loose as if his vampires are the zombies in 28 Days Later. It’s scary. The heartfelt ending is sad. Josh Hartnett is amazing, cool, gripping, and moving as 30 Days of Night’s hero Sheriff Eben Oleson. Hartnett never gives into fear and bravely attacks the vampires, leads a few survivors to safety, and keeps his cool under pressure. He’s such an underrated actor. Melissa George is pretty and courageous as the heroine Stella Oleson. I like that she really does try to help Eben, whether that’s convincing the townsfolk to go somewhere safer or conserve resources, or even help fight off vampires. For one, I completely forgot how enjoyable it is to see a movie shot entirely on film, with thoughtful uses of contrast and color grading in almost every shot. It isn't entirely monochromatic or plastically artificial, like what I've been seeing in movies shot entirely in digital format in recent years. The old analog film format carries over something that feels more organic to my eyes while watching the movie. Also, my reactions to the characters are a bit different than my previous viewing. Especially with the main characters and a few supporting characters, they have a little bit of nuance and a purpose behind their behavior.
