In this chilling adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel, withdrawn and sensitive teen Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) faces taunting from classmates at school and abuse from her fanatically pious mother (Piper Laurie) at home. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Brian De Palma’s depiction of female adolescence is extremely dubious (the opening slow-mo shower scene is beyond icky), but this is a film that fundamentally fears women.

It isn’t explicitly about school shootings and yet it shows you, like no other film I have ever seen, the horrifying wish-fulfilment ecstasy of such horrific acts. De Palma is the only director who could have done it.

It walks the line between dark comedy, horror, melodrama successfully. The over the top cruelty and humiliation portrayed in the film don’t seem ridiculous... because they represent the inner distorted world that every teen experiences in high school.

I really enjoyed this movie! It did not stay very true to a lot of the original books themes but they played it off as Carrie being weird enough to make it work. I was heavily invested in it during the emotional buildup to watch this isolated teen finally feel accepted and well thought of. Only then to watch it all come crumbling down moments after. It was like riding a rollercoaster with the climb and the fall being ever more dramatic the higher we went. The mother scenes felt impactful and disturbing. The one thing I wish this movie did better is during the prom scene once all goes to hell....they sort of backed off. I would have appreciated a more scary and intense revenge scene and bloodbath. The car scene right after was cheesy as all get out too unfortunately. That being said its a classic for a reason and it is a good story with a great famous horror heroine! Scare Factor: 4/10.
