Out of the Past (1947) Total Film Staff There's much to relish here: a script which mixes pungent humour and tension, the pervading atmosphere of corruption and obsession, and a perfectly judged, tragically stoical performance from the sleepy-eyed Mitchum.

The Running Man (2025) Molly Edwards Ultimately, The Running Man is a run-of-the-mill action flick, which is bitterly disappointing for a film adapted from a Stephen King story, helmed by a skilled filmmaker like Edgar Wright, and starring one of cinema's most promising leading men.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Total Film Staff Rob Reiner's fake "rockumentary" about the US reunion tour of British heavy-metal gurus Spinal Tap manages to be both consistently funny and - particularly to the many genuine bands who have claimed it as a tour bus favourite - painfully plausible.

M3GAN 2.0 (2025) Emily Garbutt Like its predecessor, M3GAN 2.0 is a lot of campy, silly fun. It zips along nicely, until it sort of doesn't, and the final act begins to falter in both plot and pacing as the movie is forced to confront its most significant limitation.

Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) Amy West It's clear Wassung and Trachtenberg just get it. Somehow, they're able to push the sci-fi envelope and offer up fresh images and ideas the series has yet to see, while also appealing to diehard fans with Easter eggs.

Mulan (1998) Dean Evans Most importantly, Mulan is fun: a genuinely funny, fantastical adventure. And while it suffers from a sluggish training and singing middle section, it explodes with a thumping good ending, jostled ever onwards by Murphy’s boundless enthusiasm.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Kelechi Ehenulo It's no Hakuna Matata... And it's far from Jenkins' best work, but in any other hands, a lot of Mufasa's intentions would have completely misfired. Thankfully there are some stellar vocal performances and VFX – but it could have been so much better.

Kraven the Hunter (2024) Neil Smith Had Chandor's film stayed an old-school mob yarn with a dash of All the Money in the World, it would probably have been a perfectly satisfying throwaway. What undermines it is its rather desperate eagerness to ally itself with the wider Spider-Man canon.
