Beth Accomando

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

I have been writing about film since 1987 and think of myself more as a film activist than critic because I love to advocate for movies and for them to be seen in cinemas. I also program films through Film Geeks SD at Digital Gym Cinema and Comic-Con Museum. I have been an editor on the sequels to The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and am the creator of the Emmy-winning video podcast Stripper Energy: Fighting Back from the Fringes about a civil right battle fought from the unlikely stage of a strip club.

Mother of Flies (2025) 96% EDIT “Written and directed by the husband-and-wife team of John Adams and Poser, along with their daughter Zelda, "Mother of Flies" is easily their most stunningly beautiful film.” – KPBS.org Jan 22, 2026 Full Review 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) 93% EDIT “"28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" reminds us that zombie films, at their best, have always been about what makes us human. And while it may not be a perfect allegory for current times, it does ask us to consider who the real monster is.” – KPBS.org Jan 17, 2026 Full Review Resurrection (2025) 89% EDIT “"Resurrection" is simply cinema at its most breathtaking. ” – KPBS.org Jan 5, 2026 Full Review Dracula (2025) 66% EDIT “The material does not merit its near three-hour length, but there are a few genius moments if you have the patience to wait.” – KPBS.org Nov 18, 2025 Full Review Peter Hujar's Day (2025) 92% EDIT “Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall are great, as always, and give the film an easy naturalness.” – KPBS.org Nov 18, 2025 Full Review Mistress Dispeller (2024) 95% EDIT “Lo masterminds a kind of cinematic alchemy, telling the story with such elegance and humanity.” – KPBS.org Nov 18, 2025 Full Review The Running Man (2025) 62% EDIT “"The Running Man" is an entertaining watch but it does not offer the repeat viewing fun of the original film or Wright's Cornetto Trilogy.” – KPBS.org Nov 18, 2025 Full Review The Smashing Machine (2025) 70% EDIT “The Smashing Machine proves compelling and gritty, and offers a well-deserved tribute to Kerr, who appears briefly at the end of the film as himself. Johnson and Safdie do succeed in making Kerr’s name more memorable now that it had been.” – Vanguard Culture Oct 3, 2025 Full Review TURA! (2024) EDIT “No one has ever matched Satana's ferocious vitality and sexuality. She was like a force of nature, breathtaking to behold, and this documentary does her justice.” – KPBS.org Sep 26, 2025 Full Review The Waiting Game (2024) 100% EDIT “This isn't wildly exciting filmmaking, but it is a powerful story well worth learning about.” – KPBS.org Sep 2, 2025 Full Review In the Mood for Love (2000) 92% 5/5 EDIT “Revisiting In the Mood for Love 25 years later makes for an even richer experience. We can see how it plays into that one long film Wong said he was making and can feel its particular rhythms and how it adds a few new riffs.” – Vanguard Culture Aug 22, 2025 Full Review Folktales (2025) 85% 3/5 EDIT “This is a feel good film that earns its uplifting emotions through a lot of hard work.” – Vanguard Culture Aug 22, 2025 Full Review The Shadow Scholars (2024) 4/4 EDIT “The film carefully builds its story, interweaving interviews with Kingori’s personal life, which prove to intersect in a truly staggering way, raising even more questions about fakes and power. ” – AWFJ.org Aug 21, 2025 Full Review Superman (2025) 83% EDIT “At its core, Gunn’s "Superman" is about reconnecting with our humanity and acknowledging that the choices we make define who we are. ” – KPBS.org Jul 9, 2025 Full Review F1 The Movie (2025) 82% EDIT “"F1" really puts you in the driver's seat. You feel the speed, the wind and the proximity of the other cars. The editing and cinematography make you feel the allure of the sport and the rush you get from flying in a Formula One car.” – KPBS.org Jul 3, 2025 Full Review Room to Move (2025) EDIT “It's a stunning work in which the filmmaking perfectly complements the subject matter.” – KPBS.org Jun 20, 2025 Full Review Materialists (2025) 77% EDIT “"Materialists" is Song’s take on Hollywood rom-coms. That means she uses the formula but eschews the hysteria and sitcom shenanigans to create something a little richer and more thoughtful — yet still entertaining.” – KPBS.org Jun 20, 2025 Full Review Happy Birthday (2025) 100% EDIT “Happy Birthday is a beautifully crafted film with a tiny dynamo, Doha Ramadan playing Toha, at its core. And when Toha finally comes to see the class divisions that determine her fate, we are heartbroken.” – AWFJ.org Jun 13, 2025 Full Review An Eye for an Eye (2025) EDIT “A window to a legal system that operates differently from what we have in the U.S. and as an examination of the hardships women face in Iran.” – AWFJ.org Jun 12, 2025 Full Review The Inquisitor (2025) 3/4 EDIT “Angela Lynn Tucker’s The Inquisitor opens with Barbara Jordan stating: “What the people want is very simple. They want an America as good as its promise.” Jordan spent her life and career trying to make good on that promise.” – AWFJ.org Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Dog of God (2025) 87% 3/4 EDIT “If your only knowledge of Latvian animation is the Academy Award-winning Flow, then be prepared for something very different with Dog of God, which serves up a darkly hued fever dream about the uglier aspects of humanity.” – AWFJ.org Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Dragonfly (2025) 92% 4/4 EDIT “Paul Andrew Williams’ Dragonfly is a showcase for actresses Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough.. It is a film that does not announce its intentions. In fact it continually defies both expectations and categorization, as do its characters.” – AWFJ.org Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Wick Is Pain (2025) 100% EDIT “The only real shortcoming of the documentary is that it never asks Stahelski about the influence of silent film comedians — people he calls the first stuntmen — and never asks him to really delve into his cinematic style.” – KPBS.org Jun 6, 2025 Full Review Ballerina (2025) 75% EDIT “It serves up a very formulaic story with jaw-dropping action that will make your adrenaline flow.” – KPBS.org Jun 6, 2025 Full Review Gazer (2024) 81% EDIT “The result is a grungy and entirely engrossing neo-noir that takes deliciously unexpected turns.” – KPBS.org Apr 21, 2025 Full Review
